FAQs
What is Vegan Leather?
Vegan leather is a catch-all term for materials that replace animal leather and are cruelty-free.
Vegan leather is made from various materials such as wood, cork, rubber, barkcloth, apple, pineapple, and glazed cotton.
Moreover, we see more eco-friendly alternative options becoming available as the vegan fashion market grows and evolves.
However, two of the most common types of vegan leather are produced with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or polyurethane (PU).
This is where the term “vegan leather” becomes a bit problematic.
Sure, PVC and PU are not animal products; that’s the good part.
But, the bad part is that PVC is manufactured with toxic chemicals that cannot be recycled.
So we recommend that you avoid any handbags made with PVC.
“There have been concerns over the last few years about PVC because of production challenges and because they release dioxins, potentially hazardous chemicals if burnt,” said Andrew Dent, the Vice President of Library and Research Materials at Material ConneXion.
A better synthetic alternative, while not perfect, is PU, which is less environmentally harmful and can be recycled.
Finally, vegan leather bags are getting the recognition they deserve in the fashion world.
Compared to animal leather bags – which require the sacrifice of an animal to produce – vegan leather bags are cruelty-free alternatives that keep you looking good while doing good.
Moreover, thanks to recent material developments, there are more environmentally friendly vegan leather alternatives, such as mushroom leather and kelp leather, now than ever.
Vegan Handbags Vs. Animal Leather Bags, Which One is Better?
Traditional leather handbags – the kind made from animals – have always been a staple of the fashion world.
But the world is changing as various new and established brands have begun producing vegan or faux leather bags.
Above all, the makers of vegan handbags are innovators at the core.
Creators of materials made from recycled plastic bottles, fishing nets, fruit skins, mushrooms, cactuses, and tree bark, these designers create vegan bags that are sturdy, sustainable, and, above all, stylish.
Not long ago, vegan bags were seen as ‘crunchy,’ tacky, and polluting.
Nowadays, they’re just as chic as anything produced by the most exclusive ‘designer’ brands.
And what’s more, these bags act as a badge of honor; finally, you can “wear your ethics on your sleeve”!
And it turns out what’s suitable for the animals and the planet is also good for your pocket.
Conclusion
I hope you’ve enjoyed my top 19 vegan leather handbags.
On a side note, these best vegan bags of 2023 are made from natural, organic materials.
I am talking about bags from apple leather, pineapple leaves, mushrooms, and cork, designed for spring, summer, winter, gym, beach, work, and even a particular dinner date.
But, if you are still unsure whether vegan leather bags are for you, remember that while traditional leather handbags are still out there, the world is changing fast.
More bags are made from innovative and high-quality materials.
Nowadays, vegan leather bags are as chic as traditional designer leather bags.
Above all, vegan bags are good for animals, the planet, and your pocket!
Most vegan leather bags come at a better price than their animal leather counterparts.

Congrats TheVOU, that’s a stunning selection of vegan bags for all tastes and pockets. I also love seeing JW PEI vegan leather brand in your publication, as this is one of the best vegan leather handbag brands right now, IMO, even better than Stella McCartney.
Now, here’s another brand that makes some of the best vegan leather bags right now, it is called Melie Bianco. Would be great if you can give them a mention in your esteemed magazine, and no, I am not affiliated with them in any shape or form but I really want them to succeed.
I am all pro veganism, in fashion and food but there’s something I can’t understands: Why aren’t big fashion names like Chanel, Dior, Gucci, and McQueen embark on creating luxury vegan handbags and only small, emerging designers? Isn’t this a clear indication that luxury houses don’t consider vegan fashion real fashion but just a cheap fad empowered by climate activists rather than real fashion and style connoisseurs? Comments, please.
Hi, in my humble opinion, big brands ARE dabbling in veganism in ways most of us aren’t paying attention to. For example, Gucci and Balenciaga have several shoes that are vegan friendly and even have “no animal materials” labels on their websites. Chloe has a new perfume out that has a vegan formulation and Byredo has labeled many of their perfumes as vegan friendly.
Senreve has vegan bags, Balenciaga has a few vegan bags, and there’s of course, my favorite Stella Mccartney, but also Vivienne Westwood who has been making vegan-friendly bags for a while. The problem is that many vegans won’t buy into these brands because they’re not vegan enough for their purity, just like some vegans won’t buy the Impossible Whopper from Burger King.
The way I look at it is- we’re the target audience of these products- there’s an argument that we’re not, but IMO we are- because our goal is to make veganism as normal and mainstream as possible, and we can’t change the world overnight. However, if we don’t give support to progress by brands we’ve wanted to make these changes forever, who are FINALLY doing it, for the sake of purity, I think that’s counterproductive.
Truth is, I don’t really buy “vegan brands”, the only one I’ve bought into is Alexandra K because it’s got a superior quality to it, I find most vegan brands to be cheap and low quality and not very pleasing to the eye. Most of my luxury items are from high-quality brands with accidentally vegan items or items purposely created vegan.
