Are Brooks Brothers Blazers Good Quality? Construction, Fits and Prices

What’s This About

Key Points

01Golden Fleece jackets are described as full canvas, while 1818 tailoring is listed as half canvas by a competing tailor.

02The Classic Fit Wool 1818 Blazer was $898 on the US website on 7 October 2026, reduced to $673.50.

03Full prices are a poor guide because large reductions are common.

04Choose the cut whose shoulders fit you, because sleeves and waist are far easier to alter.

A Brooks Brothers blazer can be a well-made, long-lasting jacket, but the quality depends on the line, the construction and the price you pay, so judge the individual blazer rather than the name.

Brooks Brothers opened in New York in 1818 and is closely linked with the navy blazer, yet its blazers today range from fused, discounted jackets to full canvas Golden Fleece tailoring.

This guide explains what makes a blazer well made, what the brand’s own product pages say, how much the blazers cost and how to check one before you buy.

Prices and product details were checked on the US website on 7 October 2026, and they change often.

What makes a blazer well made

A good blazer has four qualities you can check for yourself.

Quality What to look for
Construction A canvas layer in the chest (half canvas) or the whole front (full canvas) helps the lapel roll softly and the jacket hold its shape; a fused front is glued and can feel stiffer.
Cloth The fibre content on the label, such as 100% wool, and how the cloth recovers when you crush it in your hand.
Finishing Even stitching, neat buttonholes, matched patterns at the seams and a lining that sits flat.
Fit Shoulders that end where yours end, a collar that sits against your shirt collar and sleeves that show a little shirt cuff.

Price does not prove any of these, so check each one on the jacket in front of you.

How Brooks Brothers blazers are made

Construction varies between lines, so the claim that every Brooks Brothers blazer is fully canvassed does not hold.

The US product page for a Golden Fleece cotton-blend sport coat describes full canvas construction with a lining only in the sleeves and shoulders.

Nathan Tailors, a custom tailor that compares its own suits with Brooks Brothers, lists 1818 suits as half canvas and Golden Fleece jackets as full canvas.

The product page for the Classic Fit Wool 1818 Blazer gives the cloth, lining and country of manufacture but does not state the type of construction, so ask in store or pinch the front below the top button to feel for a separate canvas layer.

Details such as pick-stitching on the lapels or hand-finished buttonholes are not stated for every line, so look for them on the blazer itself rather than assuming them.

Cloth and lining

The Classic Fit Wool 1818 Blazer is listed as 100% wool woven in Italy, with a lining of cupro and viscose, and is made in Italy.

A Regent Fit textured blazer page lists 100% wool woven in Italy, half-lined, with the jacket made in the United States from imported materials.

Brooks Brothers also sells blazers in cotton piqué knit and Harris Tweed, which suit warmer and colder weather respectively.

Pure wool is the most versatile choice for a navy blazer, while a stretch blend can be more comfortable for travel; read the label to see which you are buying.

Fits and how to choose one

The US website currently groups its tailoring into Traditional, Classic and Slim fits, plus Big and Tall.

Classic is one of the three main fits.

Some current jackets and many older or second-hand ones carry fit names such as Regent, Madison, Milano or Fitzgerald, so try them on rather than relying on the name.

Fit and the silhouette you prefer are separate choices. A fuller traditional cut and a slimmer cut can both fit well if the shoulders, collar and sleeves are right.

Choose the cut whose shoulders fit you, because a tailor can shorten sleeves or take in the waist far more easily than they can change the shoulders.

What a Brooks Brothers blazer costs

Blazer Price on the US website, 7 October 2026 Made in
Classic Fit Wool 1818 Blazer $898 full price, reduced to $673.50 Italy
Regent Fit Textured Two-Button Blazer $698 full price, reduced to $249.99 United States, from imported materials
Golden Fleece cotton-blend sport coat $1,698 full price, reduced to $399.99 Stated as United States
Limited-Edition Classic Fit 1818 Blazer $1,298 full price (shown reduced to $973.50), made to order United States

The Golden Fleece page names the brand’s Haverhill, Massachusetts factory, which Brooks Brothers announced it would close in 2020, so the page may describe older stock; check the label on the jacket you receive.

Large reductions are common, so the full price is a poor guide to what you will actually pay.

At full price, a Brooks Brothers blazer costs more than many high-street and online blazers and less than luxury tailoring; in a sale, it can cost less than some mid-priced brands.

Whether it is good value depends on how often you will wear it and how well it fits, which a cost-per-wear view captures better than the label.

How long will it last?

A wool blazer that fits well, is brushed after wear, rests on a shaped hanger between wears and is dry cleaned only when needed can last for many years.

We have no independent durability test for Brooks Brothers blazers, and longevity depends far more on cloth, construction and care than on the brand.

Some long-standing customers and menswear writers have said that quality became less consistent over the years, and the brand’s 2020 bankruptcy and its announced closure of its American factories mean older and newer jackets may be made differently.

If you buy second-hand, check the label for the country of manufacture and the line, and look for wear at the cuffs, collar and lining.

How Brooks Brothers compares

Brooks Brothers sits among several brands selling a classic navy blazer, and the main differences are construction and price.

In a 2017 round-up of navy blazers, the menswear site Dappered listed the Brooks Brothers Regent fit at $498 alongside blazers from Spier & Mackay, Suitsupply, J.Crew, Lands’ End and Bonobos between about $179 and $399; those prices are long out of date, but the comparison shows how crowded this market is.

Luxury tailoring houses cost more and usually offer full canvas construction and more handwork as standard.

Compare construction, cloth and fit across brands at the price you would actually pay before deciding.

For the weekend

Are Brooks Brothers blazers good quality? The verdict

Some Brooks Brothers blazers are well made, especially full canvas Golden Fleece jackets, but construction and origin vary by line, and the evidence does not support a blanket verdict on every blazer.

Check the label, the construction and the fit, and compare the price you would pay with similar blazers from other makers.
