What’s This About

Brooks Brothers is a premium heritage clothier rather than a luxury house, and its Golden Fleece tailoring comes closest to luxury.

Key Points

01Most of the range is premium, above the high street and below luxury houses, and often discounted.

02Golden Fleece jackets are described as full canvas, while 1818 suits are listed as half canvas by a competing tailor.

03The brand filed for bankruptcy in July 2020, announced it would close its three US factories and was sold to SPARC for $325 million.

04A label says nothing certain about the wearer’s income or background, so judge the clothes themselves.

Brooks Brothers is best described today as a premium heritage clothier rather than a luxury house. Most of its range sits above the high street and below the luxury labels, while its Golden Fleece line comes closest to luxury on cloth, making and price.

Whether a particular garment counts as high-end depends on the line, the construction and the price you actually pay, because the brand sells everything from discounted polo shirts to made-to-order tailoring.

This guide checks Brooks Brothers against clear criteria, explains what changed after the 2020 bankruptcy, and shows how to judge a garment before you buy.

Where a figure comes from the company itself, we say so, and prices are dated because they change often.

How we judge whether a brand is high-end

There is no official definition of a high-end or luxury clothing brand, so we use four criteria a buyer can check for himself.

Criterion What to look for Brooks Brothers, checked 7 October 2026
Materials Fibre content, cloth origin and lining stated on the label or product page. The Classic Fit Wool 1818 Blazer is 100% wool woven in Italy with a cupro and viscose lining, according to the US product page.
Construction and origin How the jacket front is built (fused, half canvas or full canvas) and where it is made. Varies by line. The 1818 blazer page says made in Italy, and a Golden Fleece sport coat page describes full canvas construction.
Price band Where full prices sit between high-street and luxury labels, and how often they are discounted. The 1818 blazer was listed at $898 (about £670 at October 2026 exchange rates), reduced to $673.50 (about £505); a Golden Fleece sport coat listed at $1,698 (about £1,250) was reduced to $399.99 (about £300).
Distribution How widely the brand is sold, including outlets. Sold through its own shops, its website and outlet stores, with frequent sales.

Heritage matters to many buyers, but a long history does not make a particular jacket better made.

Price does not prove quality either, so each criterion is worth checking on its own.

Why the name carries weight

Brooks Brothers opened in New York in 1818 and is one of the oldest clothiers in the United States.

Abraham Lincoln wore a Brooks Brothers greatcoat to his second inauguration in 1865, and the company has said it dressed around 40 US presidents; its own publications give different totals, so treat the number as a brand claim.

The company popularised the button-down collar shirt and sold many of the garments that became the American preppy and Ivy League wardrobe, such as the navy blazer, the Oxford button-down shirt and the repp tie.

That history is why the brand is closely linked with what is now called Old Money style, a contemporary label for a classic, low-logo way of dressing.

A label says nothing certain about the wearer’s income, job or background, so it is more useful to judge the clothes than the associations.

What changed after 2020

Brooks Brothers filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on 8 July 2020, after announcing that it would stop manufacturing in Massachusetts, North Carolina and New York.

Those three American factories made tailoring in Haverhill, Massachusetts, shirts in Garland, North Carolina, and ties in Queens, New York.

The menswear writer Derek Guy reported in December 2020 that the three factories had produced only about 20% of the brand’s stock, so most Brooks Brothers clothing was already made elsewhere.

Some current Brooks Brothers product pages still list US manufacture, including a Golden Fleece coat page that names the Haverhill, Massachusetts facility, so check the label on the garment you buy.

In August 2020 a court approved the sale of the business for $325 million to SPARC Group, a venture of Simon Property Group and Authentic Brands Group.

In January 2025 SPARC merged with JCPenney to form Catalyst Brands, while Authentic Brands Group kept ownership of the Brooks Brothers brand.

Long before the bankruptcy, some long-standing customers and menswear writers complained about rising prices, the loss of familiar classics and uneven quality, and those criticisms still come up in reviews.

The practical result is that a Brooks Brothers jacket from the 1990s, one from the 2010s and one bought today may be made in different places to different specifications, so judge each garment on its own label.

The main lines and how they differ

Brooks Brothers sells its clothes in several tiers, and the differences matter more than the name on the label.

Core and casual range

Polo shirts, chinos, knitwear and non-iron dress shirts make up much of the range and are often sold at a discount.

These garments compete with other mid-priced American brands rather than with luxury houses.

The 1818 tailoring line

The 1818 line covers the brand’s mainstream suits and blazers.

On 7 October 2026 the US website listed the Classic Fit Wool 1818 Blazer at $898 (about £670), made in Italy from Italian-woven wool, and a limited-edition 1818 blazer at $1,298 (about £970) full price (shown reduced to $973.50, about £725 the same day), made to order in the United States in a numbered run of 250 to mark America’s 250th anniversary.

Nathan Tailors, a custom tailor that compares its own suits with Brooks Brothers, describes the 1818 suit as half canvas, which means a canvas layer through the chest with a fused lower front.

Golden Fleece

Golden Fleece is the brand’s highest tailoring line.

The Golden Fleece sport coat page we checked describes full canvas construction, and Nathan Tailors also lists Golden Fleece jackets as full canvas.

That construction, along with higher list prices, is why Golden Fleece is the line most often compared with luxury tailoring, although it is widely discounted in sales.

Designer lines of the past

The designer Thom Browne headed the men’s Black Fleece line, and in 2014 Zac Posen was named creative director of the women’s collection.

Those lines show the brand trying to reach new customers, but they do not change how you judge the garment in front of you.

Is Brooks Brothers luxury, premium or mid-market?

On the criteria above, most of the range is premium, with better cloth and fit choices than many high-street brands, at prices below the luxury houses, and often discounted.

Golden Fleece tailoring comes closest to luxury, mainly because of its full canvas construction and full price.

Wide distribution, outlet stores and frequent sales are the main reasons the brand is not seen as exclusive.

Whether that matters depends on what you want. If you want well-cut classic clothes, frequent sales can be an advantage.

How Brooks Brothers compares with similar brands

These comparisons describe each brand’s usual position, not a ranking.

Ralph Lauren

Ralph Lauren also sells a classic American wardrobe, with a stronger sporting and country influence, and its Purple Label line is generally priced higher than Brooks Brothers tailoring.

J.Press

J.Press is a smaller traditional American clothier, known for a strict Ivy cut and less widely sold than Brooks Brothers.

Burberry

Burberry is a British heritage brand that has positioned itself as a luxury fashion house, with prices to match.

Zegna

Zegna is an Italian house that began as a wool mill, and its tailoring is generally priced above most Brooks Brothers tailoring.

Charles Tyrwhitt

Charles Tyrwhitt is a British shirtmaker with lower shirt prices, a useful comparison if shirts are your main purchase.

Brooks Brothers at work

Workplace dress codes vary widely, so check yours before you buy.

In offices that still expect suits, such as some law firms, banks and government offices, a Brooks Brothers suit or blazer with a shirt and tie fits the traditional expectation.

In more casual workplaces, a single classic garment, such as an Oxford shirt or a navy blazer worn with chinos, usually suits better than a full suit.

Dressing in a traditional East Coast way can look out of place in some industries, so match the formality to the people you work with.

How to judge a Brooks Brothers garment before you buy

Read the label for fibre content and country of manufacture.

For a jacket, pinch the cloth just below the top button. A separate, floating canvas layer suggests canvas construction, while a stiff, glued feel suggests a fused front.

Check the fit on your own frame, looking for shoulders that end where yours do, a collar that closes comfortably and sleeves that show a little shirt cuff.

Fit and the silhouette you prefer are separate choices, so a relaxed traditional cut and a slimmer modern cut can both fit well.

Compare the sale price with the full price, because the same garment is often sold for far less a few weeks later.

Three outfits built on Brooks Brothers classics

You can build any of these with similar clothes from other makers.

For a traditional office

Wear a navy or charcoal suit, a white or light blue Oxford button-down shirt, a striped repp tie and black or dark brown cap-toe Oxfords.

For a smart-casual office

Wear a navy blazer, a light blue Oxford button-down shirt open at the neck, mid-grey wool trousers and brown suede loafers.

For the weekend

Wear a navy crew-neck jumper over a white Oxford shirt, khaki chinos and brown leather boat shoes or white canvas trainers.

Mixing one or two classic garments with clothes you already own looks more natural than dressing head to toe in one brand, and our guide to modern fashion aesthetics shows how the look fits among other styles.

Is Brooks Brothers still a high-end brand? The verdict

Brooks Brothers is a premium heritage brand rather than a luxury house, with Golden Fleece tailoring as its closest approach to luxury.

Ownership changes, factory closures and frequent discounting mean you should judge each garment on its fabric, construction, fit and the price you pay, not on the name.
