What a Zimmerli Price Pays For
1. A Swiss knitting business since 1871
Zimmerli dates its founding to 1871, when Pauline Zimmerli-Bäurlin began knitting in Aarburg, Switzerland.
According to the brand, she took up machine knitting after her husband’s dye works went bankrupt, and learned to use the new knitting machine in Basel.
The brand credits her with a double-needle knitting machine, introduced in 1874, that made ribbed underwear fabric possible.
The company opened its own factory building in Aarburg in 1888 and a production site in Coldrerio, in the canton of Ticino, in 1965, according to its history page.
A long history does not make a garment better, but it does explain why the brand still builds its range around ribbed knits such as the Richelieu line.
2. Fine natural and plant-based fabrics
Zimmerli’s most expensive men’s underwear is made from Sea Island cotton, which the brand describes as hand-picked in Barbados.
Sea Island cotton is an extra-long-staple cotton grown in very small quantities, mainly in Barbados, and the West Indian Sea Island Cotton Association certifies genuine fibre.
Long fibres can be spun into a fine, smooth yarn, which is why Sea Island knits feel soft and have a slight sheen.
The Pureness line uses modal, a soft, stretchy fibre made from wood pulp, and the Modern Luxury line uses lyocell, another wood-based fibre.
For colder weather, the Wool & Silk line blends the two fibres for extra warmth against the skin.
Rare raw fibre such as Sea Island cotton costs more to buy, and that cost carries through to the price of the finished garment.
3. Knitting and sewing in Switzerland
Zimmerli describes its underwear as handmade in Switzerland, and its Sea Island boxer brief page says the fabric is knitted in Switzerland and sewn by hand.
Reference sources list a company-owned mill in Mendrisio, in Ticino, together with Swiss subcontractors, and note that only some of the range is made in Switzerland.
The brand’s own US website describes its craftsmanship as taking place in Switzerland and the EU.
Swiss wages are high, so garments knitted and sewn there cost more to make than garments made in lower-wage countries.
If Swiss manufacture matters to you, read the label of the exact garment before you buy.
4. Shops, presentation and the brand name
Zimmerli sells through its own shops and website and through department stores, and luxury retail space, staff and packaging are paid for out of the price on the tag.
Its history page lists a heritage-led rebrand in 2026, built around what the brand calls “Private Luxury”.
Zimmerli underwear has also appeared in films: it was worn by Sylvester Stallone in Rocky (1976), Keanu Reeves in The Matrix (1999) and Hugh Jackman in The Wolverine (2013), according to Swiss press reports cited by Wikipedia.
Film appearances keep a name visible, but they add nothing to how a pair of trunks fits or lasts.
What Zimmerli Costs
Prices change and differ by country, so check the brand’s website or your retailer for the price where you live.
On Zimmerli’s US website on 7 October 2026, men’s prices included:

Prices in pounds and euros differ again, so a single figure such as “£130 a pair” does not describe the whole range.
What the Price Does Not Tell You
A Zimmerli price includes the name, the shops and the Swiss wage bill, and none of those decide whether a pair suits you.
Fine cotton and modal feel soft, but fine knits can also pill with friction and washing.
Permanent Style’s Simon Crompton rated Zimmerli the best underwear he tried in 2012 and replaced his drawer with its modal Pureness pants, but he also called it the most expensive and some of its styling old-fashioned, and a note added later warned that white pairs had pilled.
There is no published evidence that Zimmerli lasts longer than other well-made underwear, so treat durability as something to judge from your own washing and wear.
