What’s This About
Tom Ford suits cost more because the price pays for a sharply shaped cut, Italian making, prime shops and a famous name; they are worth it only if that cut suits you, fits well and gets worn often.
This guide explains the price and how to judge it, such as
Who owns and makes Tom Ford suits today
Dated examples of what a suit costs
What the strong shoulder and shaped waist ask of the maker
How Tom Ford compares with other luxury and bespoke options
Criteria for deciding whether a suit is worth it
and many more!
Buy the suit whose cut suits you and that you will wear often, whoever makes it.
Key Points
01Estée Lauder has owned the Tom Ford brand since 2023, and Zegna runs the fashion business under licence.
02Prices change, so treat every figure as a dated example.
03The house cut is structured, with a strong shoulder and shaped waist.
04A high price does not prove higher quality; check cut, construction and fit.
Tom Ford suits cost several thousand pounds or dollars ready-to-wear, and their cut is easy to recognise, with a strong shoulder, a shaped waist and a broad lapel.
This guide explains who makes them today, what the price pays for, what a suit costs and how to decide whether one is worth it for you.
Tom Ford, the Designer and the Brand
Tom Ford made his name as creative director of Gucci in the 1990s and also led Yves Saint Laurent womenswear, before leaving the Gucci group in 2004.
He founded his own brand in April 2005, and the first Tom Ford shop, selling menswear, opened at 845 Madison Avenue in New York in April 2007.
The brand has changed hands since then. In November 2022, The Estée Lauder Companies agreed to buy the Tom Ford brand for about $2.8 billion, and the deal was completed in April 2023.
Under that deal, the Ermenegildo Zegna Group runs the Tom Ford fashion business under a long-term licence, having already produced Tom Ford menswear before the sale, as Retail Dive reported.
Retail Dive reported that Tom Ford himself would stay on as creative visionary until the end of 2023, and in September 2024 Estée Lauder appointed Haider Ackermann as creative director for all Tom Ford fashion, including menswear.
Ownership and design changes can alter cut and make over time, so judge each new suit on its own merits rather than on the brand’s past.
What a Tom Ford Suit Costs
Prices change, so treat every figure here as a dated example and check the current price before you buy.
On 7 October 2026, Harrods listed a Tom Ford O’Connor single-breasted suit in stretch wool, made in Italy, at £3,890.
On the same day, Flannels listed a Tom Ford O’Connor wool suit at £3,350 before a sale reduction.
If you want a suit adjusted to you, ask a Tom Ford shop whether made-to-measure is available, what it costs and how many fittings it includes.
What the Price Pays For
The cut
The house silhouette is a defined, padded shoulder, a suppressed waist and wide lapels, often peaked, which gives a sharp, structured outline.
A cut this shaped needs careful pattern making and pressing, and it is the main reason to choose Tom Ford over a softer Italian suit.
Cloth and making
Retailer listings describe Tom Ford suits in wool, often with stretch, and give Italy as the country of making for the suit we checked.
Listings do not usually say how the jacket is built inside, so ask whether the chest is canvassed or fused, or pinch the cloth just below the top buttonhole, where a canvassed chest has a separate, loose layer you can feel.
Hand-finished details such as buttonholes add cost, but they are worth paying for only if the suit also fits you well.
Shops, service and the name
Some of the price pays for prime shops, staff, advertising and the brand’s film and red-carpet profile rather than the suit itself.
Tom Ford dressed Daniel Craig’s James Bond from Quantum of Solace onwards, as our guide to Daniel Craig’s James Bond wardrobe explains, and that profile adds to what the name costs.
Tom Ford suits are made in sizes and colourways sold through many shops worldwide, so they are not rare, and buying one does not place you in any group.
How Tom Ford Compares
Brioni, Zegna and other Italian houses sell ready-to-wear suits across a similar range of prices, and many have a softer, less shaped cut.
Savile Row and other bespoke tailors cut a personal pattern for you, often at a price close to or above a Tom Ford ready-to-wear suit, with several fittings.
Made-to-measure from a smaller maker can give you a similar sharp outline for less, if the maker can cut a strong shoulder well.
Compare cut, construction, fit and price on the same day if you can, rather than comparing brand names.
Does a Tom Ford Suit Last?
A well-made wool suit worn in rotation and cleaned sparingly can last for many years, whatever the brand.
Very fine or stretch cloths can show wear sooner than a sturdier worsted, so choose the cloth for how often you will wear the suit.
The strong Tom Ford shoulder and wide lapel are distinctive; they stay wearable if they suit you, but they will date sooner than a plainer cut if fashion moves away from them.
Is a Tom Ford Suit Worth It?
Judge a suit against these criteria rather than on the price or the name.
Cut. Choose Tom Ford if you want a structured, sharply shaped suit; if you prefer a soft, relaxed jacket, another maker will suit you better.
Fit. A shaped jacket shows a poor fit quickly, so check the shoulder, collar and waist and budget for alterations.
Construction. Ask how the chest is made, and check the buttonholes, seams and pattern matching.
Use. A navy or charcoal suit worn every working week earns its price far faster than a suit kept for rare events.
Value. Compare with other luxury ready-to-wear, made-to-measure and bespoke options, and with second-hand Tom Ford, before you decide.
A high price does not prove higher quality, and a suit does not change how successful you are.
On balance, a Tom Ford suit can be worth it if you want its sharp, structured cut, it fits you well and you will wear it often; otherwise, other makers offer well-made suits for less.
How to Wear a Tom Ford Suit
Wear a navy peak-lapel suit, a white shirt, a dark navy silk tie and black cap-toe Oxford shoes.
Wear a charcoal suit, a light blue shirt, no tie, and dark brown suede loafers for a smart evening outside the office.
Wear, for black tie, a black dinner suit with a shawl or peak lapel, a white dress shirt, a black silk bow tie and black patent shoes.
