What’s This About
A Sunspel T-shirt costs more because it is made from long-staple Supima cotton in the company’s own factory in England, and because its long history and James Bond connection let it charge a premium.
This guide explains what a Sunspel price pays for and how to judge whether a Sunspel T-shirt is worth it to you, such as

A high price does not prove quality, so judge a Sunspel T-shirt on its fabric, fit, care and how often you will wear it.
Key Points
01The Classic T-shirt was £95 on Sunspel’s UK site and $98 on its US site on 7 October 2026.
02Sunspel says the Classic T-shirt is made by hand in its Long Eaton factory, its home since 1937.
03Figures such as 12 processes and 15 quality checks come from Sunspel and have not been independently checked.
04A plain T-shirt has no visible logo, so buy it for the feel and fit, not for what it might signal.
A Sunspel T-shirt costs several times more than a plain T-shirt from the high street.
On 7 October 2026, Sunspel’s men’s Classic T-shirt was £95 on its UK website and $98 on its US website.
That price pays for the cotton, a T-shirt made in England in the company’s own factory, a long history and the margin a respected name can charge.
This guide explains each of those costs from Sunspel’s own statements and dated reviews, separates the brand’s claims from independent findings, and ends with clear criteria for deciding whether a Sunspel T-shirt is worth it to you.
The Short Answer to Why Sunspel Costs More
Sunspel does not publish a cost breakdown, so any exact split of the price into cotton, labour and profit would be a guess.
What can be said is which costs Sunspel carries that a mass-market T-shirt maker usually does not.
Cotton. The Classic T-shirt is made from extra-long staple Supima cotton in a fabric Sunspel calls Q82.
Making. Sunspel says every Classic T-shirt is made by hand in its own factory in Long Eaton, England.
Small scale. A single English factory producing basics costs more per garment than very large overseas factories.
The name. A long history and a film connection let the brand charge more than the T-shirt alone would cost to make.
The Heritage Factor
Sunspel was founded in Nottingham in 1860 by Thomas Arthur Hill, according to the company and to Wikipedia’s account of its history.
The company says it made some of the world’s earliest T-shirts, and Wikipedia dates that to the beginning of the 20th century.
Sunspel says it began making T-shirts in the early 1900s from Sea Island cotton and calls them the first luxury T-shirts in the world; that is the brand’s own description, and it gives no exact year.
The company moved to its factory in Long Eaton, Derbyshire, in 1937, and says it has been based there ever since.
Sunspel says it designed the Riviera polo shirt in the 1950s, and that costume designer Lindy Hemming later tailored it for Daniel Craig’s James Bond in Casino Royale (2006).
That film is a large reason many men outside Britain know the name.
In 2005, the founder’s great-grandson, Peter Hill, sold the company to Nicholas Brooke, and the designer Jonathan Anderson was its creative director from 2009 to 2014, according to Wikipedia.
Heritage explains some of the price people are willing to pay, but a long history on its own does not make a T-shirt better made.
The Cost of Making T-Shirts in England
Sunspel says its Classic T-shirt is made in its own factory in Long Eaton, its home since 1937.
According to Sunspel, making a Classic T-shirt involves 12 processes and 15 recorded quality checks, each garment passes through the hands of 10 craftspeople, and each T-shirt is finished with a sticker naming the person who carried out the last inspection.
These are the brand’s own figures and have not been independently checked.
What is clear is that wages and running costs in England are higher than in the countries where most T-shirts are made, and a small factory cannot spread its costs over millions of garments.
That is a real reason the price is higher, whatever you think of the result.
Why Sunspel’s Fabric Affects the Price
Sunspel says the Q82 fabric used for the Classic T-shirt is made from extra-long staple Supima cotton grown on a single family-owned Californian farm.
Supima is a trademark for American-grown Pima cotton, a cotton with longer fibres than most.
Longer fibres can be spun into a finer, smoother yarn with fewer loose ends, which is why long-staple cotton feels softer and costs more than ordinary cotton.
Sunspel describes its yarn as combed to remove short fibres, twisted together into a two-fold thread and then passed over a flame to burn off loose fibres, a finishing step usually called gassing or singeing.
The result is a lightweight, smooth jersey.
Lightweight jersey feels cool and drapes well, but it is also thinner than the heavyweight T-shirts some brands now sell, so choose the weight you prefer before you compare prices.
Sunspel also makes a Heavyweight Classic T-shirt, listed at £120 on its UK site and $135 on its US site on 7 October 2026, if you prefer a thicker jersey.
Sunspel Compared with Mass-Produced T-Shirts
Gentleman’s Gazette reviewed Sunspel T-shirts and polos in April 2022 and updated its review in August 2023, when it listed the Classic T-shirt at £75 ($90).
The reviewer approved of the fabric and the flat, neat seams, praised the classic fit, and called the shirts excellent quality that wash and wear well.
The review accepted that $90 is a lot for a T-shirt but argued the shirts are worth it on cost per wear, and said the Sea Island cotton versions, at £155 ($195), are not for everyone.
That site carries commercial links, so treat it as one informed opinion rather than a test.
We have not tested Sunspel T-shirts ourselves, and we know of no independent study of how many washes they last.
How long any cotton T-shirt lasts depends heavily on how it is washed and dried, so follow the care label. Sunspel advises a gentle wash at 30°C and no tumble drying for the Classic T-shirt.
Is a £95 T-Shirt a Status Symbol?
A plain Sunspel T-shirt has no visible logo, so most people will not know what you are wearing.
That makes it a typical garment of quiet luxury, the style of dressing in well-made clothes without obvious branding.
A T-shirt does not tell anyone about your income, background or class, and buying one for what it might signal to others is rarely good value.
The better reason to buy a Sunspel T-shirt is that you like how it feels, fits and looks, and will wear it often.

Is a Sunspel T-Shirt Worth It? Here Is the Verdict
Use these criteria before you buy.
Fabric. Decide whether you prefer a fine, lightweight jersey or a heavier T-shirt, because Sunspel’s Classic is on the lighter side.
Fit. The Classic T-shirt is a slim fit, and Sunspel’s product page gives the model’s height, chest and size to help you choose; try it on, and check the shoulder seam, the length and the sleeves.
Origin. If a garment made in England matters to you, Sunspel states that the Classic T-shirt is made in its Long Eaton factory.
Price. Compare the full price with sale prices and with long-staple cotton T-shirts from other makers.
Use. Count how often you would wear it; a white, navy or grey T-shirt worn every week spreads its cost over many more days than a seasonal colour.
Care. If you would rather wash at high temperatures and tumble dry, a cheaper T-shirt may suit you better.
On balance, a Sunspel T-shirt is a well-reviewed, English-made garment in fine cotton, and you pay a clear premium over the high street for it.
It is worth it if you value the fabric, the fit and where it is made, and you will wear and care for it well.
It is harder to justify if you want a hard-wearing T-shirt for rough use, or if a well-fitting cheaper T-shirt already does the job for you.
How to Wear a Sunspel T-Shirt
A plain T-shirt is easiest to wear in a few neutral colours that suit the rest of your clothes.
Wear a white T-shirt, a navy unstructured blazer, stone chinos and brown suede loafers, for a smart-casual lunch.
Wear a navy T-shirt, grey wool trousers, white leather trainers and a camel overcoat, for a relaxed city outfit in autumn.
Wear a grey marl T-shirt, dark straight jeans, brown leather boots and a navy cotton field jacket, for a weekend.
Each of these outfits works with T-shirts from other makers too.
