1. Denzel Washington in American Gangster: brown suit, pale yellow shirt

What is documented: this is a film costume for the 2007 film American Gangster, not Washington’s own wardrobe.

BAMF Style’s 2014 costume analysis describes a light sand-brown, single-breasted, peak-lapel suit worn with a pale yellow shirt with French cuffs, a dark brown woven silk tie, brown medallion-toe derby shoes, dark brown socks, gold cufflinks and a brown silk pocket square.

How to adapt it: take a taupe or brown suit and wear it with an open-necked rust or terracotta shirt and dark brown loafers for a warm evening event without a tie.

The costume’s alternative light blue shirt is a useful reminder that a cooler colour can still sit inside a warm outfit when you prefer it.

A wool or linen suit is a practical substitute for silk, which creases easily and shows a strong sheen.
