Why Are Bresciani Socks So Expensive, and Are They Worth It?

Start here

What’s This About

Bresciani socks are expensive because a small Italian family company knits them finely from cotton, merino, cashmere and silk yarns with flat-linked toes, but the price does not guarantee that a pair will last longer or stay up better than cheaper socks.

This guide explains what a Bresciani price covers and how to decide whether the socks suit you, such as:

Key Points

01Mario Bresciani founded the company in 1970, and his sons now run it from Spirano, near Bergamo.

02The company makes all its socks in Italy and makes 82% of its sales abroad, Milano Finanza reported in December 2025.

03One retailer listed calf-length ribbed wool socks at $65 and cotton socks at $45 in October 2026.

04A 2011 review found its pairs stopped staying up after about five months, so judge fit from your own wear.

Bresciani socks cost several times the price of ordinary socks, and many men want to know whether a pair is really worth it.

In October 2026, one menswear retailer listed Bresciani calf-length ribbed wool socks at $65 a pair and three-ply cotton socks at $45.

This guide explains what that price pays for, where Bresciani has been criticised, and how to decide whether the socks suit the way you dress.

How We Judge Whether Socks Are Worth Their Price

We use the same four criteria for any sock brand, so you can apply them to Bresciani or to a cheaper pair.

Criterion What to check Bresciani
Yarn The fibre content on the label and whether it suits the season and your shoes. Egyptian cotton, Australian merino wool, cashmere, linen and silk, depending on the style.
Knit and finish How fine the knit is and whether the toe seam is flat. Fine-gauge knitting with linked toes.
Fit and hold Length, how the cuff grips and how many sizes are offered. Known for over-the-calf socks; offered in several sizes.
Price The price per pair against similar socks, and how long a pair lasts in your rotation. $45 to $65 for calf-length cotton and wool at one retailer in October 2026.

A higher price is not proof of higher quality, so the label is only the starting point.

Who Makes Bresciani Socks

Mario Bresciani founded the sock maker Calzificio M. Bresciani in 1970, and the family company is now based in Spirano, near Bergamo in northern Italy.

His sons Massimiliano and Fabio, who joined in 1989 and 1993, now run the business, Milano Finanza reported in December 2025.

The same report described a company of 29 people that makes all its socks in Italy, mostly for men, and makes 82% of its sales abroad.

For many years much of Bresciani’s output was made for other labels, and its own brand has grown from 20% to 62% of what it makes over five years, according to the same report.

What a Bresciani Price Pays For

1. Fine natural yarns

Bresciani says it uses Egyptian cotton, Australian merino wool, Himalayan cashmere, French linen and silk.

Gentleman’s Gazette reported in 2011 that the company used a two-ply 140s merino yarn from the Italian spinner Cariaggi for its wool socks.

Finer, two-ply yarns cost more to buy and knit, and they give a smooth, dense sock.

2. Fine knitting and linked toes

The same 2011 profile described computer-operated knitting machines with 84 to 260 needles and said every sock was hand linked at the toe.

More needles mean a finer knit, and a linked toe, whether by hand or by a linking machine, leaves a flatter seam than an overlocked one, which you notice in close-fitting shoes.

When Permanent Style visited the Spirano factory in 2021, it reported that about 95% of production was done by electronic machines, that some toes were still linked by hand while linking machines gradually replaced the hand-linkers, and that socks passed through 13 quality-control stages.

3. A wide range of colours and designs

Permanent Style reported that Bresciani produces more than 200 new designs a year, alongside its plain and ribbed socks.

A wide range lets you match socks closely to the colour of your trousers, which is the simplest way to wear dress socks well.

4. Making the socks in Italy

Italian wages and a small family workforce cost more than mass production in lower-wage countries, and the price reflects that.

What the Price Does Not Tell You

Fine socks are not automatically hard-wearing, because finer yarns can wear through sooner at the heel and toe than sturdier ones.

In 2011, Gentleman’s Gazette said it could not recommend Bresciani socks because the pairs it bought stopped staying up reliably after about five months of wear.

That review is now old and covers the pairs its author bought, so treat it as one data point rather than a verdict on today’s socks.

There is no published evidence that Bresciani socks last longer than other well-made socks, so judge durability from your own washing and wear.

How Bresciani Compares With Other Fine Sock Makers

Bresciani is often compared with Marcoliani, another Italian family maker, and with the English brand Pantherella.

Brand What sets it apart What to check
Bresciani Italian maker founded in 1970, known for fine-gauge over-the-calf socks. The higher price, and whether the cuff stays up after months of wear.
Marcoliani Italian family maker in Brianza with a wide range, including no-show socks. Whether its one-size cuff holds on your calf.
Pantherella Founded in Leicester in 1937; it closed its Leicester factory in 2024. The country of manufacture on current stock.

Our guide to whether Marcoliani socks are worth the price applies the same criteria to Marcoliani, and our guide to choosing and styling men’s socks covers lengths, fibres and colours for every brand.

How to Wear Bresciani Socks

Match dress socks to your trousers rather than your shoes, so the leg looks unbroken when you sit.

Choose over-the-calf socks with suits, so no bare shin shows when you cross your legs.

Choose merino or cashmere blends in cold weather and cotton or linen in warm weather.

Wear (office): a charcoal worsted suit, a pale blue poplin shirt, a navy grenadine tie, charcoal ribbed merino over-the-calf socks and black cap-toe Oxford shoes.

Wear (smart casual): a navy hopsack blazer, a white oxford cloth shirt, mid-grey flannel trousers, grey cotton socks with a fine pattern and dark brown penny loafers.

Wear (evening): a midnight blue dinner suit, a white dress shirt, a black silk bow tie, black silk or fine cotton over-the-calf socks and black patent Oxford shoes.

Are Bresciani Socks Worth Their Price?

Bresciani socks are worth considering if you wear tailoring often, want Italian-made over-the-calf socks in fine yarns, and can afford the price without stretching your budget.

They are harder to justify if you rarely wear tailored trousers, because well-made socks from other makers can cost much less and keep your feet just as comfortable.

Buy one pair, wear and wash it for a few months, and only then decide whether to build a drawer of them.

The choice comes down to your personal style, how often you wear tailoring and how much you want to spend on socks.
