Useful neutrals are warm taupe, soft camel, muted khaki, warm grey, dark brown and cream.
Useful accents are greyed olive, sage, muted rust, soft terracotta, dusty teal and a soft, greyed burgundy.
Retail colour names cover wide ranges, so compare the actual knit or shirt in daylight rather than trusting the label.

1. Jude Law: a taupe scarf with grey trousers and brown loafers
What is documented: at the London world premiere of Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore on 1 April 2022, Law wore a Brioni Amalfi jacket in cashmere and silk, grey wool trousers, a taupe cashmere and silk scarf and dark brown tassel loafers, according to The Fashionisto’s report, which credits Rich Gold and Alamy for its photograph.
The report does not name the jacket colour, so the lesson here comes from the scarf, trousers and loafers.
How to adapt it: wear a taupe or soft camel scarf with a warm grey or soft brown jacket, mid grey trousers and dark brown suede loafers.
The jacket colour is our suggestion, because the report does not establish it.
Why it works: a muted warm colour beside the face, a warm grey below and dark brown shoes give gentle steps in depth rather than strong contrast.
This works for a smart casual office, a gallery evening or a premiere that does not require a tie.
2. Josh Hartnett in Trap: a tan work jacket over an olive jumper
What is documented: this is a film costume, chosen by costume designer Caroline Duncan for Hartnett’s character in the 2024 film Trap, not Hartnett’s own wardrobe.
BAMF Style’s 2025 costume analysis describes a tan Todd Snyder chore coat in a colour called dark wheat, an olive Pendleton jumper with taupe ribbed trim and a striped chest band in black, brick red, mustard and deep blue, dark indigo jeans, a dark brown belt and russet-brown Red Wing boots.
How to adapt it: start with an olive crew-neck jumper and a tan or soft camel work jacket, then add mid or dark wash jeans and brown leather boots.
If the striped band feels too busy, choose a plain olive knit and let the jacket and boots supply the warmth.
Why it works: tan, olive and russet brown are all muted, warm and close in depth, so the outfit looks coordinated without matching.
The dark indigo jeans show that a deeper blue can anchor a warm outfit without spoiling it.
