What’s This About
This page turns three documented celebrity outfits and four editorial outfits into Soft Summer ideas you can wear with clothes you already own.
It covers the practical side of muted, cool-leaning colour, such as
a pale blue suit worn casually over a white T-shirt, as Idris Elba did at a 2022 premiere
a grey-green tailored suit with a light grey tie, from Jake Gyllenhaal’s 2026 premiere look
a grey suit with blue-grey shirts and muted ties, from a television costume worn by Mahershala Ali
complete outfits for the office, a wedding and the weekend
and many more!
None of these men is presented as a confirmed Soft Summer; the outfits are the lesson.
Key Points
01Soft Summer is muted first and cool-leaning second, with greyed blues, dusty rose, mauve, greyed sage, cool taupe and a greyed navy, and nothing vivid.
02A celebrity photograph cannot establish anyone’s seasonal palette, including yours; use the outfits as references and compare the colours against your own face.
03Greyed colours work well in tone-on-tone outfits, where texture does more of the work than strong contrast.
04Nothing in your wardrobe is banned; black shoes, white shirts and dress codes still have their place.
A dove grey suit, a dusty blue shirt and a mauve knitted tie are enough to try Soft Summer colours at work, and you can test each of them against clothes you already have.
The outfits below show how muted, cool-leaning colours behave in tailoring and casual clothes, using three looks documented by published reporting and four outfits we suggest.
These are outfit references, not a list of confirmed Soft Summer men.
The records reviewed for this page document no personal colour assessment for anyone named here, and online labels for the same man often disagree, which is a good reason not to rely on such labels.
What to borrow from a Soft Summer palette
In the twelve-season convention used across The VOU’s colour guides, Soft Summer is defined by mutedness first. Its colours are greyed and gentle, with a cool lean rather than a strongly blue cast.
Its nearest warm-leaning neighbour is Soft Autumn, and its clearer cool neighbour is True/Cool Summer, a position described in The Concept Wardrobe’s Soft Summer guide.
We use that description as a styling convention, not a scientific classification of the people mentioned below.
Useful neutrals are greyed navy, dove grey, cool charcoal, cool taupe, mushroom and soft white.
Useful accents are dusty steel blue, dusty rose, mauve, greyed sage, greyed sea green and soft plum.
Retail colour names cover wide ranges, so compare the actual shirt or knit in daylight rather than trusting the label.
The Soft Summer men’s palette guide explains the palette in detail and shows how to compare it with Soft Autumn.
1. Idris Elba in a pale blue suit over a white T-shirt
What is documented. At the New York premiere of the film Beast in August 2022, Elba wore a custom pale blue Gucci suit with a two-button, peak-lapel jacket, a fitted white T-shirt and tasselled loafers, according to InsideHook’s report.
The report describes the shade as icy; it does not say anything about Elba’s colouring.
How to adapt it. The lesson is the casual suit, and the colour can move a step towards Soft Summer.
Try a dusty blue or blue-grey cotton or linen suit with a soft white or pale grey T-shirt and dark brown or grey suede loafers.
If a full suit feels too formal, wear the jacket alone with mid grey trousers.
Both versions are suggestions; neither the softer blue nor the grey trousers come from the photographed outfit.
Why it works. A single light-to-medium blue across the jacket and trousers keeps the outfit calm, and the plain T-shirt keeps it relaxed.
This suits a summer party, a creative office or a premiere-style evening that does not require a tie; check the invitation before wearing it to a wedding.
2. Jake Gyllenhaal in a grey-green suit with a light grey tie
What is documented. At the New York premiere of The Bride! in 2026, Gyllenhaal wore a bespoke Anderson & Sheppard single-breasted, peak-lapel suit described as sage-green grey, in merino wool cloth from Fox Brothers, with a white shirt, a light grey tie and black double-buckle shoes, according to Stylectory’s report, which credits Getty Images for its photographs.
How to adapt it. A greyed green suit is uncommon, so start with a greyed sage knit tie or a sage cardigan worn with a dove grey suit.
Keep the light grey tie idea, because a tie close in depth to the shirt makes a quiet, tone-on-tone collar area.
Swap the white shirt for soft white or pale grey if you prefer a softer collar; that swap is our suggestion, not part of the reported outfit.
Why it works. Greyed green, grey and white sit close together, so the outfit reads as one soft colour story rather than a set of contrasts.
3. Mahershala Ali as Cottonmouth in a grey suit with blue-grey shirts
What is documented. This is a television costume, chosen by the costume department for the character Cornell “Cottonmouth” Stokes in Luke Cage, not Ali’s own wardrobe.
BAMF Style’s 2018 costume analysis describes a solid grey Dolce & Gabbana suit with a matching waistcoat, in a wool and silk blend, worn once with a blue-grey and white Bengal stripe shirt and an olive-brown tie with grey and taupe squares, and later with a pale blue shirt and a dark grey or blue tie, plus dark brown derby shoes.
How to adapt it. Choose a mid grey suit, then rotate a blue-grey striped shirt and a pale blue shirt with ties in dusty steel blue, greyed navy or cool taupe.
Dark brown shoes remain a sensible choice with grey, even though brown is often described as an Autumn colour.
Why it works. Every shirt and tie in this rotation stays greyed and mid-toned, so you can combine them without strong jumps in colour.
Four Soft Summer outfits to try
The following outfits are editorial suggestions, not photographed celebrity looks.
Use them as starting points with clothes you already own, and change one colour at a time so you can see what each change does.
Office, suit and tie
Greyed navy suit, dusty blue shirt, mauve knitted tie, navy socks and dark brown oxford shoes.
The dusty blue shirt keeps the colour next to your face softened, and the mauve tie adds colour without brightness.
Daytime wedding
Dove grey suit, soft white shirt, dusty rose tie, grey socks and grey or dark brown suede loafers.
A dove grey suit suits many daytime weddings; follow the invitation if it asks for morning dress or black tie.
Smart casual
Cool taupe chinos, blue-grey oxford shirt, greyed sage crew-neck jumper and grey suede desert boots.
Three mid-toned colours in close depth give a quiet outfit that still has variety.
Weekend
Mid-wash jeans, soft white T-shirt, dusty plum overshirt and grey trainers.
Mid-wash denim behaves like a greyed blue neutral, so the plum overshirt can carry the colour.
Body shape and fit are separate decisions
Colour placement can work alongside silhouette and fit, but it does not replace a garment that fits well.
The VOU’s guide to dressing for your body shape covers silhouette and fit, and a separate guide shows Soft Summer colours for an hourglass body shape.
Start with how the jacket fits at the shoulders and how the trousers break, then decide where a stronger colour should go.
Questions about Soft Summer celebrity inspiration
Q. If I look like someone on this page, am I a Soft Summer?
No; resemblance, skin depth, ancestry or one shared feature does not establish a seasonal palette.
Compare a greyed blue or dusty rose with a muted olive or soft camel of similar depth against your own face, as described in the Soft Summer guide.
Q. Does Soft Summer hair have to look matte or ashy?
No; hair finish changes with products, lighting and greying, so treat hair colour as one clue among several rather than a requirement.
Q. Can a Soft Summer man wear black or bright white?
Yes; many men compare charcoal or soft white near the face, but black shoes, black trousers and a white dress shirt remain useful.
For a black-tie invitation, wear the black or midnight blue dinner suit the dress code expects; Emily Post explains the black-tie variations.
Q. Where can I compare Soft Summer with its neighbours?
The Summer colour season guide compares the three Summer palettes, and the True/Cool Summer guide covers the clearer cool neighbour.
