On 7 October 2026, for example, the retailer Todd Snyder listed Alden’s shell cordovan plain-toe blucher at 989 dollars.

Alden’s History
Charles H. Alden founded the Alden Shoe Company in 1884 in Middleborough, Massachusetts, according to the company’s own history.
The company moved to Brockton in 1933, built a new factory in Middleborough in 1970, and still makes its shoes there.
Alden describes itself as a family-owned business and as the only original New England shoe and bootmaker still operating of the hundreds that began there.
Its quiet, classic designs are why the brand often appears among high-end quiet luxury brands, though history alone does not make a particular shoe better made.
The Indy Boot
Alden’s model 405, a brown moc-toe boot, is widely reported, for example by The Rake in November 2018, as the boot Harrison Ford wore as Indiana Jones, which is why it is called the “Indy boot”.
Neither Alden nor the films’ costume team has published a dated confirmation that we found, so treat the link as a widely repeated association rather than a documented fact.

Alden’s current catalogue lists the 405 in Original Brown workboot leather on its Trubalance last with a Neo-Cork sole.
The nickname adds demand for one model, but it does not change how the boot is made.
Leather
Alden has bought shell cordovan, a dense, smooth leather cut from beneath the hide of a horse’s hindquarters, from the Horween Leather Company in Chicago since 1930.
Shell cordovan is scarce and slow to tan, which makes it one of the most expensive shoe leathers, and it ripples rather than creases with wear.
Alden’s current catalogue describes its work boots as made from “robust Horween leathers” and lists a belt in Horween’s Chromexcel, which Horween says takes at least 89 separate processes over 28 working days and is finished with oils, waxes and greases such as beef tallow and beeswax.
Oiled pull-up leathers of this kind lighten where they bend and can be brought back with conditioner, which suits boots that will be worn hard.
The better the leather, the more of the price goes on materials, but the right choice depends on how you will wear the shoe: shell cordovan for dress shoes and loafers, oiled leathers for everyday boots.
Construction
Alden’s shoes and boots are Goodyear-welted: a strip of leather is stitched around the edge of the upper, and the sole is stitched to that strip rather than glued.
A welted shoe can be resoled several times, and Alden’s factory restoration service, priced at 219 dollars on its website on 7 October 2026, rebuilds a pair on its original last and returns it with cedar shoe trees.
Alden makes its shoes on many lasts, the foot-shaped forms a shoe is built on, so the same size can fit differently from one model to another.

Made in the United States
Making shoes in Massachusetts costs more than making them in countries with lower wages, and that cost is reflected in the price.

Fit: try the exact model on the right last, because Alden’s sizes vary between lasts; ask the shop for advice if you cannot try them on.
Repair: remember that Goodyear welting lets a cobbler or Alden’s own restoration service rebuild the shoe.
Price: compare the shop price with the same model at other authorised shops, and with welted shoes from other makers.
Use: count how often you would wear the pair, and with how many of your existing outfits.
On balance, Alden makes durable, repairable American shoes from well-regarded leathers, and some of the price pays for the name, its following and scarce colours rather than the shoe.
A pair can be worth it if it fits you well on the right last and you will wear it often for many years, rebuilding it when needed.
It is harder to justify if you need a shoe for occasional wear, or if the fit is uncertain, because other welted makers offer similar construction at different prices.
