Split End Repair Treatments For Healthier Hair According To Experts
Split ends are one of the most frustrating side effects of growing your hair.
No matter how well you condition your locks, split ends are inevitable, caused by heat tools, brushing, coloring, and…living your life!
Split ends affect any hair type; untreated, it’ll make your hair look frayed and unhealthy.
But, while there’s no magic cure to dead-ends, there are steps you can take to prevent split ends from occurring.
The easiest way to treat split ends is by trimming your hair regularly.
However, if getting a regular trim is not something you’re interested in, there are other ways to prevent fraying:
brush your hair correctly
– start from the bottom and work your way up slowly –
avoid using hot tools
– as these burn your hair’s natural fats and destroy its keratin structure –
avoid hair dyeing
– over-coloring and frequent highlighting will lead to hair damage –
Of course, laying off the colors and hot tools are excellent preventative measures to take.
Yet, if you’re past the prevention stage, this article is for you:
Before we start, it is essential to understand that no hair treatment can fix split ends – not yet – but rather improve your hair looks.
“All split-end repair products on the market are designed to fix the appearance of split ends“- Amy Schiappa, a Pro hairstylist from New York.
“Once the strand has split and separated at the end, there’s no treatment in the world to bring it back together, at least not permanently.“
Split end treatment sprays, glossing serums, and leave-in conditioners all help improve your hair’s appearance.
Overall, split ends will look less noticeable and give your hair a sleeker and healthier look.
From DIY intensely hydrating oils like coconut and avocado, fish oil treatments, and tried-and-true hairdos that keep moisture in and prevent breakage, in this article, you’ll find the best split end treatment without having to step foot in a salon.
Without further ado, no matter how fancy your aesthetic clothes are, if your hair is a mess, nothing helps.
Therefore, these are the best 28 split end treatments and products recommended by stylists and hair experts right now:
Hair Oil Split End Treatment
Never underestimate the power of rubbing a natural oil onto your frayed ends.
Rubbing a natural oil onto your hair shaft has the added benefit of nourishing damaged strands with vital amino acids while minimizing the appearance of split ends between salon visits.
However, there are two types of hair oil treatments for split ends.
Hydrating treatments, where you leave the oil in your hair for 30-40 minutes at a time and wash it off after.
Reparatory treatments, where you apply the oil on your hair, and you’re good to go.
The only caveat here is to be mindful of how much you’re applying; it is an oil, after all, so begin with a small amount of product and work your way up as needed.
Best oil for strong hair & fixing split ends
Pure coconut oil
I am sure this isn’t the first time you’ve heard of the beauty benefits of coconut oil (and likely won’t be the last).
Coconut oil is excellent for skin, nails, and even cleaning makeup brushes, and when it comes to hair, there’s no difference.
Coconut oil can treat various hair issues such as dandruff, stubborn hair growth, and, you guessed it, split ends.
To get the best results from your oil hair treatment, take a scoop of coconut oil and work it into your hair—from the ends to mid-shaft.
Then, clip your hair up, wrap it up in a towel or plastic wrap, and wait 30 minutes.
Hop back in the shower, rinse, and then shampoo your hair twice.
Repeat once every two weeks.
Excellent oil combo to achieve healthy hair follicles
Sweet almond oil & argan oil
Both oils are incredibly hydrating and widely available in their purest forms but also commonly included as the key ingredients in most popular hair products.
One of my fav products in this range is Bread Beauty Supply Hair-Oil.
Bread snagged its first-ever Allure Best of Beauty Award in 2020 with its Hair-Oil.
That’s because it is a reliable source of glossiness from natural oils and extracts and confers fantastic smoothing on split ends.
“I love that it’s silicone-free and non-greasy,” says Amy, who insists that those with curly hair are at risk of becoming obsessed with this hair oil.
“It combats frizz and smells divine!“
Deep treatment session
I’ve been using this Jojoba oil as my hair cure-all for years and don’t plan on stopping anytime soon.
It’s great for smoothing flyaways, adding a little extra dose of moisture, and, yes—strengthening my ends to prevent breakage.
The product I recommend in this range is the “La Tierra Sagrada Jojoba“.
For heavy split ends
My fav product is the Tropic Isle Living Jamaican Black Castor Oil, made from pure organic Jamaican black castor seeds.
It can be used as a heat protectant as well – make sure you massage it onto your hair before blow-dry or flat-iron your hair.
Finally, last but not least oil I use for an emergency split end treatment is fish oil.
Last resort split ends fix
Fish oil isn’t a prevalent choice for topical hair treatments; frankly put, there are better-smelling alternatives out there.
Yet, fish oil holds the key to hair growth and repair for those suffering from super soft hair.
That’s because fish oil contains rich fatty acids that support stronger strands and stimulate blood circulation in the scalp.
I combine two fish oil capsules with one tablespoon of coconut oil and one teaspoon of lavender in a saucepan.
I then heat the mixture on low for five minutes and pour it into a large bowl.
Then, I dip the split ends of my hair in the bowl and work the mixture upwards, avoiding the roots.
Once well covered, I wrap up my hair in a towel or cover it with a plastic cape and let it soak for 40 minutes before washing it out.
I promise you, the natural omega-3 and -6 oils in the fish oil will remedy all your split-end miseries like magic.
Bonus: Whenever I do the fish oil treatment for split ends, I also take – orally – a combination of folic acid, quinoa protein, and flax seed oil to increase omega 3 absorption.
Leave-in Hair Treatments
I’ve been using this leave-in spray for years, and it never loses its luster.
You can’t overdo it on application – we all hate that feeling of heavy hair packed with a product – and a leave-in split end treatment that’s sprayed over prevents that.
If you’re into spray solutions, a leave-in conditioner will offer similar levels of hydration by temporarily smoothing the appearance of split ends.
Living Proof’s Restore Repair Leave-In
Infused with the brand’s patented healthy hair molecule along with nourishing silk proteins, Living Proof’s Restore Repair Leave-In is an excellent product for damaged strands and dry ends.
I’ve tried the product myself with great results – silky smooth hair with no damage in sight.
Schwarzkopf Bonacure Peptide Hair Tips Repair
Schwarzkopf Bonacure Peptide Hair Tips Repair is a leave-in treatment designed to target damage and rebuilding hair from deep within the shaft.
Moreover, the company uses peptides and other innovative ingredients generally found in expensive skin-care products.
To me, Raincry is a must-have treatment for stopping split ends before the process starts, and once damaged, to rebuild hair strands back.
Hair Serum Treatments
Not to be confused with hair oil, hair serum is a silicone-based styling product designed to coat the hair’s surface to help impart added shine, smoothness, hydration.
Hair serums are also great at keeping humidity and pollution away, and by the way, you always have the option to go silicone-free!
Intended to be used on wet or dry hair, most serums are great as pre-styling treatments and finishing products.
Hair serums are also an excellent choice for wash days, in-between washes, and on-the-go touch-ups.
And while some serums get a bad rap for being too heavy and slick for thin or oily hair types, here are the two products I recommend the most:
Instant hair split repair
Rita Hazan Triple Threat Split End Remedy
You’ll never need a trim after using this serum, and that’s a fact.
Lightweight, almost like a lotion, this serum can be applied on wet or dry hair; you’ll notice the improvement immediately.
Best hair split night treatment
Shu Uemura Essence Absolue Overnight Hair Serum
Shu Uemura’s Essence Absolue Overnight Serum is a more intensive version of the Essence Absolue Nourishing Protective Oil brand.
The serum was designed to stay in all night – I do a full day into the night course, which works great for me.
I love this ‘hair shiny’ serum as it repairs even the worst damaged hair, all while I sleep.
The next day, my hair is strengthened, softer, and breakage-free, like it’s been looked after by a celebrity hairstylist.
Anti-frizz treatments are based on a unique technology designed to seal the hair cuticle, lock moisture in, and keep humidity out.
Some of the best Anti-frizz products also contain a UV filter to protect your hair from the sun and keep it from drying out even more.
You can use anti-frizz products and reparative sprays either on damp hair or as a final coat after styling – to ensure the humidity-proof your hair.
However, you have to be careful with anti-frizz treatments, as, in this case, more is not better.
Any excess air moisture will cling onto the product, primarily if you use too much.
That means your hair will look weighed down, greasy, and frizzy.
A smarter hair smoothing strategy, in this case, is to layer various anti-frizz products throughout your routine.
Two of my favorite anti-frizz products, trialed and tested in hair wars for years, are:
Minimize frizzy appearance
Color Wow Pop + Lock
Color Wow Pop + Lock is an excellent product for minimizing the appearance of frizzy, broken ends.
Yes, while it may not repair split ends, it does a damn good job of camouflaging them.
If you’re looking for a serum able to finish your hair with a super-smoothing shine while sealing ragged ends, this is the one for you.
The product is also recommended by Randy Schueller, a leading cosmetic chemist who described it as a must-have sealant for sparkling hair.
Best for dry hair
Redken Extreme Anti Snap Leave-In Treatment
I use this oily/creamy formula whenever I want to let my hair soak for a full day or so.
The product has a thick consistency, but it is not heavy or gross and does a great job at penetrating even the driest, most damaged ends of my color-treated hair.
I apply it wet or dry, depending on my level of laziness, and slick my hair up in a bun.
Then, I let it sit for a total of 24 hours, breathing in the herbal-scented essential oils.
When I wash it out, my hair is softer to the touch and visibly smoother along the ends.
Moisturizing Hair Masks
I’ve already introduced you to some excellent hair split ends treatments, but something just crossed my mind.
What’s the key to fixing split ends? Well…prevention.
Indulging in a nutrient-dense hair mask that coats your strands with everything needed to stay healthy will always keep split ends at bay.
Food for split ends
Avocado protein mask
One of the most popular hairs moisturizing masks is the avocado mask.
I tweak the avocado mask with an egg and a few drops of olive oil.
Together, the trio contains fatty acids and vitamins E and K meant to soften, moisturize, repair, and protect the hair and its follicles, resulting in healthier strands that aren’t as susceptible to getting split ends.
First, I mash up the avocado and mix it with the egg to a creamy paste consistency.
I then add olive oil until the mix is a little thicker than a conditioner and apply it to my hair – with a focus on the ends.
I leave the mask on for 20 to 30 minutes, and at the end, I rinse it well with warm water.
For those of you not that much into smashing avocados and eggs, there are lots of market-ready hair mask I use, and I highly recommend:
John Masters Organics Hair Mask for Normal Hair
John Masters Organics Hair Mask for Normal Hair cares for the scalp as much as it does for split ends, sending ingredients where they’re needed the most.
As it cleanses and replenishes moisture with rose water up top, its organic apricot kernel oil and avocado butter provide serious strength to the length.
Five minutes twice a week means less-noticeable past damage and defense against future damage.
Fortify split hair
Imbue Curl Restoring Intensive Mask
This is a unique hair mask formula with a good balance of moisturizing ingredients and protein.
Moisture helps the hair stay smooth and beautiful, while the protein makes it more robust, and Imbue Curl Restoring Intensive Mask fits the bill.
Thanks to the rare blend of moisturizing cupuaçu seed butter, coconut oil, and hydrolyzed soy protein that prevents breakage and fortifies frazzled ends.
Leonor Greyl Paris Masque Quintessence
If you have an oily scalp and dry ends, this mask is going to become your favorite treatment in no time at all.
Yes, I know $57 for a hair mask sounds borderline obscene, but I haven’t tried any other mask that makes such a noticeable difference in my hair.
Moreover, if you regularly heat-style your hair or have hair that veers toward the dry or brittle side, this mask will turn your tresses butter-soft – a product that never disappoints.
Reconstructive Moisture Mask
Kristin Ess Strengthening
Kristin Ess is an excellent hair mask for those on a tight budget.
You’re technically supposed to use it on clean, wet hair, but I choose to run it through my strands of hair from roots to ends about an hour before shampooing.
I’ve found that shampooing afterward brings bounce and movement back to my hair while still allowing me to reap the mask’s moisturizing benefits.
Once the hair is dried and styled, it feels softer and looks healthier and shinier.
Color Damage Repair/Protection
Hair coloring is, arguably, the leading cause of split ends and brittle hair.
However, frequent hair dying and coloring does more than just splitting your hair, up to the point of causing extreme hair damage in the long run.
Damaged hair develops cracks in the outside layer (cuticle).
Once the cuticle lifts (opens), your hair is at risk for further damage and breakage.
It may also look dull or frizzy and be challenging to manage.
For the most part, since hair is a collection of dead cells, restoring them is impossible, so the damage is permanent.
However, in time I’ve come across a few damaged hair targeted treatments that can restore the outer cuticle to improve the look and feel of your hair.
Best for colored hair
Olaplex Hair Perfector No. 3
If you color your hair often, Olaplex hair treatment deserves a place in your top 3 best hair products.
The product is a science-backed, colorist-approved restorative treatment that must be applied on wet hair (before shampooing or conditioning).
Then, leave it for as long as you like before continuing your hair-washing routine.
In time, the product will strengthen the hair from the inside out and reduce overall breakage big-time.
Best for heavily damaged hair
Living Proof Restore Repair Leave-In
One of my favorite products if your hair is overly damaged from chemical treatments such as highlights and color treatments.
I love the way it smells, but even more so, how silky it leaves my hair.
Moreover, the product is designed to prevent up to 93 percent of styling-induced split ends, so give it a try.
Best for bleached hair
Shu Uemura Silk Bloom Restorative Treatment
If your hair is bleached and feels crunchy and brittle, you have to apply this product.
Use it on clean damp hair and leave it on for 30 minutes at a time, then rinse.
Its lotus flower and ceramide-laden formula bind the hair cuticle and cortex, leaving it much shinier and healthier.
I especially like that it doesn’t weigh down my fine strands, but it works wonders on thicker hair as well.
Split End Shampoo Treatments
Choosing the right shampoo with the right ingredients can help a lot in dealing with split ends.
When lathering your hair, the last thing you want is to strip of its natural oils with a harsh shampoo.
The best approach is to use a nourishing shampoo that increases the strength and flexibility of the hair and decreases breakage – one of the leading causes of split ends.
Here’s a list of the best split end shampoos with both innovative and tried-and-true ingredients, designed to improve the health of your hair and scalp, put an end to split ends, and leave hair looking shiny, youthful, and fully restored.
For a natural look
Garnier Whole Blends Repairing Shampoo Honey Treasures
I love Garnier Whole Blends Repairing Shampoo Honey texture, color, smell, and after appearance.
Packed with honey, propolis, and royal jelly – this is like a bees-made shampoo — this product has a creamy, repairing formula that gently strengthens strands for a natural hair look.
Innovative shampoo addon
Cuvée Essential Booster
Cuvée’s newest product is my quick and cheap alternative solution to lengthy and expensive hair treatments.
If there were an award for “hair day” or “doing the most,” this product would win.
Drop it into your shampoo or conditioner, use it to smooth flyaways, apply it after your get out of the shampoo—it’s that versatile, and it never makes your hair feel greasy or weighed down.
The booster contains hyaluronic acid and a slew of other vitamins that make your hair stronger and healthier (not to mention smell amazing).
Davines Naturaltech Nourishing Hair Building Pack
This is one of the only protein-packed deep conditioners that mend even the most fragile hair ends without leaving them too brittle or overly packed with protein.
Since I only wash my hair twice a week, I’ll use this every two weeks in place of my usual conditioner.
I comb it through with a wide-tooth comb and let it marinate for 20 to 30 minutes.
Be careful; this is a powerful formula, so do leave it on any longer than 30 minutes.
Since I’ve started using it, I’ve noticed less hair breakage and fallout.
This combo can be easily placed under the hair masks category.
Yet, certain oils and mixtures are helpful in mend your split ends, but when combined, there’s a synergetic effect that boosts collagen production.
Honey and olive oil combination
For once, the moisturizing combo of honey and olive oil makes it a dynamic duo for nourishing damaged hair.
But, as honey is a humectant with excellent emollient properties, it works wonders at treating a dry scalp and boosting shine.
On the other hand, olive oil is an all-natural magic potion lauded on beauty websites for decades now, and that’s because it works.
Olive oil hydrates, nourishes, prevents split-ends and feeds the scalp with high levels of oleic acid.
But, to get that collagen-boosting effect, you have to mix them, and here’s how you do it:
Mix three tablespoons of organic olive oil with two tablespoons of raw honey.
Apply the mixture to your freshly cleaned and towel-dried hair fibers and leave it in for 20 to 30 minutes.
Rinse it out and wash your hair with one of the treatment shampoos I’ve presented above for excellent results.
Now, just as above, if you’re not into making your masks and collagen boosters, I have a pre-made product ready for you.
Best for collagen protection
Oribe Invisible Defense Universal Protection Spray
This weightless spray is packed with plant-based collagen hydrate and softens the hair by feeding the scalp and locking in moisture.
Moreover, the glossiness this product imparts is rivaled only by its scent.
The added moisture creates more shine and an overall smooth finish, so this is an excellent option for you if you have thin hair.
Heat protectants aren’t the most thrilling products in hair care – designed to stop tools heat from damaging your hair.
However, if you use heat tools regularly – even a hairdryer – then their benefits are bar none.
Each spray formula is a little different, but the core goal of protecting your hair against flat iron, dryer, and curling damage remains the same.
See below my favorite hair heat protection products:
Split ends coating
Coco & Eve Like a Virgin Miracle Hair Elixir
Oils protect hair from further damage by coating it and giving an additional layer of protection, protecting the natural keratin found in your hair.
That’s why the amount of coconut oil in Coco & Eve’s Like a Virgin Miracle Hair Elixir can seal split ends so well.
Moreover, with a healthy dose of hyaluronic acid, papaya seed oil, and fig extract, this elixir protects hair from heat tools and fights frizz.
Leve in conditioner
Matrix Total Results Miracle Creator Multi-Benefit Treatment Spray
I am impressed with how effective Matrix Total Results Miracle Creator Multi-Benefit Treatment Spray is on hair ends that have come undone.
Designed as a leave-in conditioner, heat protectant, finishing spray, and everything in-between, this multitasker means business when it comes to preventing split ends and softening every inch of hair.
Sun Protection And After-sun Treatment
We want to think we’re all pretty clued-up when it comes to sunscreen.
We know that we need to wear it every day, even on cloudy days, to protect our skin from harmful UV rays, aging, and pollution.
And yes, you should wear it even when you’re sitting all day indoors.
But what about sun protection for hair? – you’re probably guilty of leaving your hair out to dry in the sun in the past, without thinking of the damage that those pesky rays can do.
Because, just like your skin, hair burns too when unprotected.
All hair types, when exposed to UV rays, undergo a certain amount of damage.
“UV rays burn the inside and outside layer of the hair follicle, resulting in brittle and lifeless ends. And just like unprotected skin, hair can get sunburnt” – Zoe Irwin, ghd UK ambassador.
The Innate Life Rose Hair Elixir
I’ve always noticed that the summer’s potent combination of sun, sand, and chlorine leech away most of my hair moisture, turning the ends of my hair incredibly dry and straw-like.
But, for the last couple of years, I stop inches of my hair from breaking off and splitting with the help of this delightful rose-scented hair oil.
Thanks to the 15 different organic oils it’s formulated with (like rose-hip, avocado, sea buckthorn, and black cumin seed oils, others), I love how rich and moisturizing it is.
I also like that it’s natural, handcrafted, vegan and cruelty-free.
Best hair and scalp protection
Sachajuan Hair In The Sun
This clever cream does-it-all; it protects hair from UV rays while providing subtle hold so your hair won’t frizz out when rinsing or swimming.
Enriched with a unique co-polymer – a blend of coconut oil and cinnamon – and a mix of sea algae and proteins that help coat individual strands, this product will defend your hair against sun damage by deflecting UV rays away.
Apply to wet or dry hair; you’ll find this product as one of the best companions during the post-lockdown beach breaks.
I have carefully selected all products in this article for their properties of mending split-end hairs, from dry shampoos to baobab oil.
Also, all presented treatments and natural solutions have been carefully trialed and selected for their reparative and restoring powers to healthy hair.
I always use natural ingredients such as coconut oil, avocado, castor oil, and botanical blends.
Oils are especially effective at delivering hydration and maintaining it.
However, I always have on my shelve pre-made products for days when I am in a rush or can’t be bothered to make them myself.
Regardless of which solution you adopt as the best split end treatment for you, try not to go overboard; each treatment I present here is very potent, and a little can go a long way.
Now it’s your turn…
Which one of these split end treatments works for you and why?
Is there any other way to get rid of split ends that you’ve tried and want to add to this list?
