Allen Edmonds is an American shoemaker based in Port Washington, Wisconsin, known for Goodyear-welted dress shoes such as the Park Avenue cap-toe Oxford.
At full price a pair costs several hundred dollars, so the fair question is whether the shoes are worth that much to you, or only on sale.
This guide gives the brand’s documented history, explains what the price pays for, sets out clear criteria for the “worth it” question and shows how to wear the best-known models.
The Allen Edmonds Heritage
The company was founded in 1922 by Elbert W. Allen in Belgium, Wisconsin, and took the Allen Edmonds name after Bill Edmonds joined the business in the early 1930s.
It gained much of its following by supplying shoes to the US Army and Navy during the Second World War.
In January 2013, Bloomberg quoted the company’s chief executive as saying that every US president from Ronald Reagan to George W. Bush took the oath of office in Allen Edmonds shoes.
The Park Avenue cap-toe Oxford, still the brand’s best-known shoe, has been a best-seller since 1982, according to Gear Patrol (May 2022).
Ownership has changed several times. The Minneapolis investment firm Goldner Hawn Johnson & Morrison bought 90% of the shares in 2006, Brentwood Associates bought the company in 2013, and the footwear group Caleres bought it in December 2016 for $255 million, as BizTimes reported.
What the Price Pays For
Construction
Allen Edmonds says its shoes are made in Port Washington with a 360-degree Goodyear bench welt, a strip of leather stitched all the way round the shoe that joins the upper to the sole.
Because the sole is stitched to the welt rather than glued to the upper, a worn sole can be replaced without damaging the rest of the shoe.
The company describes a 212-step process, and the space under the insole is filled with cork, which moulds slowly to the shape of your foot.
Wikipedia reports that, as of 2022, the company employed 135 craftspeople, many of them second or third generation.
A welt that runs all the way round is not automatically better than one that stops at the heel, but it gives the shoe a slightly sturdier look.

Where the Shoes Are Made
Since 2006 the uppers for the brand’s hand-sewn collection have been cut and sewn at a company-owned factory in the Dominican Republic and then finished in Wisconsin.
Product pages state where each shoe is made, so read them if American manufacture matters to you.
Labour, Leather and Fit
American factory wages, calf leather and a large range of sizes and widths all add to the cost of each pair.
The brand’s shell cordovan models use cordovan supplied by the Horween Leather Company.
The wide range of widths is a practical advantage, because men with narrow or wide feet can often find a better fit than in brands that make one width only.
Allen Edmonds does not publish a cost breakdown, so any exact figure for how much of the price is leather, labour or profit is a guess.
Prices at Full Price, in Sales and for Seconds
On 5 October 2026, Nordstrom listed the Park Avenue at $450 to $550, depending on the version.
Dappered gave a list price of $450 in its April 2024 review, and its updated listing showed a sale price of $349 during the brand’s Rediscover America sale in October 2026.
A Gentleman’s Gazette reviewer paid about $250 for a pair of Park Avenue factory seconds (review updated March 2022).
Factory seconds are shoes with small cosmetic flaws, so inspect them for even stitching, sound welts and leather without deep marks before you buy.
Prices change often, so check the current price where you live before deciding.
Recrafting
Allen Edmonds offers a recrafting service that replaces the heel, sole, leather welt and cork filling, refinishes the upper and fits new laces.
On 7 October 2026, the company’s website listed its standard recrafting service at $150 and a fuller package at $175, with a turnaround of about four to six weeks.
Wikipedia, citing the company, reports that it recrafts about 26,000 pairs a year and that a pair can usually be recrafted about four times.
Any good cobbler can also resole a Goodyear-welted shoe, so compare local prices too.
Is Allen Edmonds a Luxury Brand?
By most measures, Allen Edmonds is a premium American maker rather than a luxury house.
Its core shoes sell through more than 60 of its own shops (a 2022 count) and many department stores, are often discounted, and cost far less than English makers such as John Lobb.
In August 2024 the company moved upmarket with the Reserve Collection, a range of eight styles priced from $800 to $3,000, made in limited quantities in Port Washington and sold through Bergdorf Goodman, Nordstrom and its own shops, according to its owner Caleres.
“Luxury” describes how a brand is priced and sold, not a guarantee of better shoes, so judge each pair on fit, construction and price rather than on the label.
Are Allen Edmonds Shoes Worth It?
Judge them against these criteria rather than on the price or the name.
Construction. Goodyear welting and leather soles mean the shoes can be resoled many times, which spreads the cost over years.
Fit. The wide choice of sizes and widths is the brand’s clearest practical strength, so try the exact model, size and width, ideally in the afternoon when feet are slightly larger.
Price. Full price is a lot to pay when the same shoes are often discounted, so many reviewers suggest buying in a sale or as a factory second.
Finish. Some owners and reviewers report uneven finishing on individual pairs; Dappered’s April 2024 review pair, for example, had small marks on the rubber heel, so check each pair when it arrives.
In use, a black or dark brown Oxford that you wear every week repays its cost far faster than a shoe for rare occasions.
As for alternatives, English makers such as Edward Green and Crockett & Jones usually cost more, while Spanish makers such as Carmina offer welted shoes at overlapping prices.
A high price does not prove higher quality, and a famous name does not change how a shoe fits.
On balance, Allen Edmonds shoes can be worth it if the last and width fit you, you buy at a sale or seconds price and you plan to wear and resole them for years; Gentleman’s Gazette reached a similar view, calling the Park Avenue a dependable base model rather than the best shoe on the market.
Which Allen Edmonds Shoes to Choose
Park Avenue Cap-Toe Oxford
The Park Avenue is a plain cap-toe Oxford with closed lacing, one of the most formal everyday shoes a man can own.
Wear a navy or charcoal wool suit, a white shirt, a dark silk tie and black Park Avenues with dark socks, with a navy overcoat in winter.

McAllister Wingtip
The McAllister is a wingtip brogue, with a decorated toe cap whose wings run back along the sides, which makes it a little less formal than a plain Oxford.
Wear a brown or grey tweed jacket, a blue Oxford shirt, grey flannel or cord trousers and brown McAllisters.
Loafers and Derby Shoes
A leather penny loafer or a plain Derby with open lacing covers business-casual days and weekends.
Wear a navy knitted polo shirt or a white Oxford shirt, stone chinos, a navy unstructured jacket and brown leather loafers.
Looking After Your Shoes
Use cedar shoe trees, rest each pair for a day between wears and polish regularly so the leather does not dry out.
Have the heels and soles repaired before they wear through to the welt, because a damaged welt makes recrafting harder.
The Verdict
Allen Edmonds makes Goodyear-welted American dress shoes with an unusually wide range of sizes and widths and its own resoling service.
The full price pays for American manufacture, the brand and that service as well as the construction, and other makers offer similar construction at similar or lower prices.
The shoes are best value when bought in a sale or as seconds, in a versatile style such as the Park Avenue, and worn and resoled for many years.
